How do Cannabis Terpenes Affect the Body?

Most people have no idea what a terpene is even though they ecounter them every day. However, the more that science uncovers about the amazing medicinal properties of plants like marijuana, the more the general public will come to be aware of the theraputic compounds that have surrounded them for centuries.

Terpenes are the smelly oils that humans have loved through the ages on blueberries, lavender, and a variety of flowers.  However they are also the ones that produce THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids and are responsibe for the aromatic diversity found in the vast array of strains of marijuana plants.

Terpenes cause various effects by binding to receptors in the brain, similar to cannabinoids. The infographic to the left, provided by Leafly, details properties of six common canabis terpenes and there is a link back to the original article.

It is always important to note that as with any naturally grown product there are a number of variables that can dramatically effect each harvest thus effecting the terpenoid profile as a result.  Lab-testing is the on way to know for certain what the terpene potency is of any given strain.

Also, be aware that how you use it can also effect potency.  If heated beyond its boiling point the beneficial qualities can be seriously damaged. A “low-heat” device is typically best.
